Suggested Reading

Both Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM) and yoga are ancient systems of health and healing. They have been in continuous growth and development for thousands of years. Over that time, both have amassed truly unbelievable amounts of clinical information from practitioner-patient interaction.

That being the case, modern practitioners can be practicing wholly valid forms of either system and, yet, the medicine practiced may take a significantly different form, compared to that of other practitioners. There are different, widely recognized "styles", as well as variance amongst practitioners of the same style.

The following information is made available, in part, to help the reader get an idea for the major influences on my unique style of practice. For example, in both AOM and yoga, I place large emphasis on studying and basing my clinical practice on what are referred to as the "classics" (those texts that reflect the core theoretical underpinnings and which laid the groundwork for all subsequent development).

The following can also act as a "Suggested Reading" list for both the lay person and professional, alike. Hence, I have broken down the texts into specific categories.

Please note - This is a work in progress. Eventually, each listing will have a brief annotation summarizing the work and its unique contribution to my private practice and the field, in general.

Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine)

Classics and Pre-modern Texts

A Qin Bowei Anthology. Paradigm Publications.

A collection of clinical essays from a highly respected twentieth-century Chinese medical physician, this text is an excellent example of the the art being continually evaluated in a clinical setting, revised, and passed on from practitioner to practitioner, generation to generation.

Chace, C. (trans.)
The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica: A Translation of the Shen Nong Ben Cao. Blue Poppy Press.

One of the primary classics of Chinese medicine, this is a compilation of herbs and their medicinal effects, authored over two thousand years ago. From this text, over a hundred generations of Chinese medical herbalists have used and evalauted these herbs in clinical environments, passing their experiences on to later generations.

Shou-Zhong, Y. (trans.)
Fu Qing-Zhu's Gynecology. Blue Poppy Press.

Written by Fu Qing-zhu (1607-1684), during the Qing dynasty, this is an extremely important premodern text on Chinese medical gynecology. Many of the clinical theories and herbal prescriptions applied in modern times stem from this work. A book such as this allows the practicing clinician a peek into the sage-like mind of master practitioners that have come before us.

Shou-Zhong, Y. (trans.)
The Golden Needle: and Other Odes of Traditional Acupuncture. [Zhen-Jiu Da Cheng or Grand Compendium of Acupuncture, Book Two, by Yang Ji-Zhou]. Churchill Livingstone. Bertschinger, R. (trans.)
Heart and Essence of Dan-Xi's Methods of Treatment: A Translation of Zhu Dan-Xi's Zhi Fa Xin Yao. Blue Poppy Press.

Chinese medicine could be understood as a collection of many different theories, or schools of thought, on medical practice. They each share a core philosophy and fundamental approach, making them distinctly Chinese, but are different in their respective perspectives and emphasis in diagnosis and treatment. One of these is referred to as the school of 'Enriching Yin'. This text was the last authored by the founder of that school, Zhu Dan-xi.
