Growing up in a house with three women and having close female friends throughout my adult life, I have heard many stories of severe pain and discomfort associated with menstrual cycles. I have shared with them a deep frustration with the limited assistance the Western medical community has to offer. I am quite proud and excited to be able to offer real assistance with Chinese medicine. Disorders of the menstrual cycle are one of Chinese medicine's greatest strengths. Generally speaking, no matter what a woman's main complaint is, no matter what she comes in to get treated, her cycles get better with treatment. And there are no side effects with proper treatment. The Liver and Kidney systems are primarily responsible for a smooth, pain free menstrual cycle. These systems include the physical liver and kidneys, but they are much wider in scope, incorporating many physiological processes, as well as mental and emotional states. Painful periods are almost always caused by obstruction of the Liver system. When this system fails to ensure the 'smooth flow of energy and blood', the blockage and obstruction results in pain, sometimes excruciating. The menstrual cycle is uniquely tied to the Liver system, as it is a regularly occurring, periodic physical process. Problems with the cycle, be it painful, heavy, light, irregular cycles, etc., are common specifically because of this connection. Any time the Liver system is aggravated, such as with stress, frustration, depression, guilt, and so on, the menstrual cycle will be affected. (This connection also explains why the menstrual cycle improves with treatment of many other disorders. Additionally, as we treat problems with menses, many other issues will simultaneously clear up.) Treatment, ideally, includes weekly acupuncture treatments and Chinese herbal medicine . It often takes two to three full cycles to gain the initial bulk of improvement. Depending on underlying causes and individual constitutions, up to six months, possibly longer, may be required to achieve lasting effects. If you or anyone you know suffers every month with their cycle and is told they'll just have to 'put up' with it or go on the pill, please contact a licensed acupuncturist. There is a highly likely chance we can be of great assistance. For more on what acupuncture can treat, please click here.
