Migraines, and headaches in general, can be severely debilitating. Thankfully, Chinese medicine can be very effective in eliminating many types of headaches quickly and with very few, if any, side effects.

The cause of headaches vary widely. Generally, migraines are caused by excess energy (from the Liver system) flooding the head causing severe pain, possibly accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light (both also associated with the Liver system).

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are both therapies of choice for migraines and severe headaches. They can act quickly reducing severity and frequency of attacks within one to two treatments, and there is a good chance that after several sessions the headaches will be gone for good.

Depending in the nature of the headache, it may be possible to gain relief from doing acupressure on yourself at home. There is an acupuncture point located on top of the feet in the depression between the first and second metatarsal bones (the bones of the foot connected to the big toe and the second toe). While you are experiencing a headache, this point should be sensitive to pressure.

Applying pressure and rubbing here for 10-15 minutes may likely reduce the severity of the headache. Aggressively massaging this point in the early stages of a migraine may reduce the severity of it or deter the pain all together. Regular massage (daily for 10-15 minutes at a time) should not only ease stress and tension it may reduce the frequency of headaches you experience.

It is important to not allow severe headaches to continue untreated, as there may be serious underlying organic disease. If you experience a steady increase in either severity or frequency please seek medical help.
