Depression is common in modern society, often times significantly degrading quality of life. Depression can range from a mild case of being 'bummed out' to a more serious mood disorder presenting with serious emotional compromise, as well as physiological disturbance.

The experience of depression is not new with modern society. Chinese medicine has been effectively treating depressed mood and the symptoms of depression for thousands of years. In many ways, Chinese medicine is the ideal treatment for this condition. As this system of medicine is inherently holistic, diagnosis and treatment necessarily incorporate mental and emotional states alongside physical.

Physical treatment with acupuncture, internal medicine (Chinese herbal medicine), qigong exercises, etc., directly treat the physical symptoms, while simultaneoulsy relaxing and regulating the mind and mood. Additionaly, Chinese medical counseling and meditation help the patient find deep and lasting health and peace.

Often times, many of the symptoms of depression disappear during the initial treatment. Though they may return in the days after that treatment, with continued sessions lasting health can be attained.

Those seekling Chinese medical care for depression should be prepared to address their diet and overall lifestyle. For an overview of changes that may be of immediate assistance with depression, please see Foundations of Health.

Depression can be a serious disorder. If you find it negatively affecting your life on a daily basis, please seek medical care, be it from the Chinese system of health, traditional Western medical, or a psychologist.
